Sketching is really something that you do for yourself. That is, you may show your sketches to others, but they really are for your own growth as an artist, for planning more elaborate art projects, for reference later, or to save memories, as in a sketchbook that you take on a trip.
People get together for sketch crawls to sketch in a group. But basically sketching is a solitary activity.
You can sketch just about anywhere and anytime as long as you have some light to see by---and a fairly still surface to sketch on. But people can and do sketch sometimes in near darkness or on bumpy roads. It’s all up to you.
Learning to sketch is really a matter of learning to see, to look really closely at what you are drawing. Observation is the greatest teacher. Practice does the rest.
Eventually this site will include advice from artists on sketching and drawing, links to resources, and so on. For now you can watch our collection of videos on learning to sketch.
